What is Disk Defragmenter and how does it work?
Disk Defragmenter, as the name suggests removes any fragmentation that as occurred on the hard disk. Fragmentation occurs over time as files are saved, changed and deleted. When a file is changed or saved it may be stored in a different location on the hard disk than the original. This causes your computer to eventually become slower and slower has the hard drive has to search in multiple locations to open a file.
Running Disk Defragmenter reorganises the files on the hard disk so that the different sections of the fragmented files are realigned, therefore significantly decreasing the amount of searching the hard drive as to perform when opening a file. A good way to picture this is by visualising the keys on a piano, if using only one hand, a person pressed the key furthest right and then the key furthest left it would take much longer than the person pressing two keys side by side. Imagining the keys where segments of a file, before defragging the key furthest right and the key furthest left would be part of the same file, However after disk defragmenter had been run the two keys would have been placed side by side.
Overall Disk Defragmenter is a simple to run, free program that can really boost your computers performance with very little effort, with a choice of automatic scheduling or manual operation.
