What can you do to help your website rank higher in Google?

So you’ve got a web developer and he knows all his fancy HTML, CSS, JavaScript, etc. languages and they have years of search engine optimisation (SEO) experience, all of which comes with a price tag, many small start-up businesses cannot afford such expensive options so this article is here to tell you what you (as a non-techsavvy web user) can do to help your site rank higher in Google.

The more links you have to your site the better, and to do this you don’t need to know any fancy scripting languages. There are many ways to get links back to your site, we will now go through a few of the options but the most important thing to remember is to be creative! Also it is important to get relevant links back to your site, for example if your website is about flowers and floristry, you do not want a link from a site that is about the latest games, most of this is common sense, just think about what kind of people would be interested in your site and what kind of people you will get from clicking the link you have on another website.

Link Exchanges

Exchanging links with another website owner is a great way to get quality links back to your site, this will often require you to put a link on your website back to theirs, if you know how to do this thats great, but if not don’t worry I can’t imagine your web developer would charge a great deal, if anything at all to add a link to your website for you.

The problem with link exchanges is that they are very time consuming, don’t get me wrong, every part of SEO is, but link exchanging is practically lengthy. You have to find a web owner you think may want to exchange links with you, decide where you will place their link and where they will place yours, then there is actually getting the link on there. So, if you can do it, it’s great! Its even easier if you have friends that own websites then link exchanges are not so much of a pain.

Link Directories

Link directories are websites that allow web owners to submit their link, often for free, here you will be able to fill in a simple form that will require your web address (the actual link) your business or website background, what it is about etc. Once you have filled in and submitted the form your link will be accessible and Google can crawl hopefully adding it to your page rank.

There are thousands of link directories out there, just do a Google search for “Link Directory” and you will see what I mean, every spare minuet you have, get submitting, every little helps! Just remember to add your link under the correct category that matches your websites subject.

Classified Ads

There are also many sites such as www.gumtree.com that allow you to post free classified Ads, most will also allow you to add images, keywords, contact details and even more information such as business opening hours and location. As these sites are usually already high in Google they are an excellent place to start as your listing will appear quite quickly.

The downfall is that these sites allow you to add a free listing but also offer paid options and after a few days your listing will sink lower in the database and you will have to pay to bring it back up to the top again (there is no reason why you can’t add another free one though).

It may even be worth paying the small amount they are asking if you are getting enough leads directly from the website.

Web Forums

Forums are an excellent way to reach hundreds of people for free; you can sign up to forums and introduce yourself, your business and website or whatever! With this one remember that forums are communities and people do not like spam, in fact many forums will not let you post a link until you have a certain amount of posts that you have contributed to the community.

Because of this, this method can also be a little time consuming but also can be very fun, you can speak to many new people that may even lead to link exchanges! In my experience it is best to just be honest, just tell people you are looking to promote your website and most people will be willing to even help.

Do a Google search to find some forums that relate to your website, so if your website is about flowers or floristry search “floristry forum” or “floristry community”.

Facebook

This will only be a short section as I plan to write an in-depth article on how Facebook and other social networking sites can help you promote your website, so keep a look out at http://www.eastmidlandsit.co.uk/.

Facebook allows you to reach millions of people easily; if you already have a Facebook account then once you have created a business page you can invite all your friends which will then hopefully result in their friends visiting your website. Again Facebook is already very high in Google so this helps your link popularity which is what we want to do.

You can also take Facebook to the next step and advertise your business page, the beauty of Facebook adverts is that you can reach exactly your target audience and Facebook will tell you exactly how many people you will reach. For example, setting up an advert for East Midlands IT and their student support service it is possible to only display adverts to students currently at university within an 80 kilometre radius of Derby city centre , this will reach around 41,000 students, where else could you possibly get such specific advertising?

Facebook is an excellent free lead generating source, you would be silly to not at least give it a go!

Final Word

Hopefully this article was able to give you an idea of how you can improve your websites Google ranking. Please leaves me feedback on this article and if it has or has not helped you! Please come back to http://www.eastmidlandsit.co.uk/ soon.
Thank you for reading!

Nice article, but doing SEO with directory submission is by far easier with gsa directory submitter. They have it all automated.
